By air

  • Sarajevo (SJJ) is the main international airport, about 12 km from the city centre, with flights from many European cities, Istanbul and the Gulf.
  • Tuzla (TZL) is a Wizz Air base, with flights to Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Cyprus and other countries.
  • Banja Luka (BNX) has a smaller number of low-cost flights to Western Europe.
  • Mostar (OMO) has few, mostly seasonal flights.

Airports in neighbouring countries are often useful: Dubrovnik is 30–40 minutes from Trebinje and about 2.5 hours from Mostar; Split is 2.5–3 hours from Mostar; Zagreb is about 2.5 hours from Bihać and the Una National Park.

By road

  • Check that your car insurance covers Bosnia and Herzegovina. On a Green Card, the BIH box must not be crossed out.
  • If you rent a car in another country, the rental company must allow it to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Dipped headlights are required during the day all year; winter tyres are compulsory from 15 November to 15 April.
  • The A1 motorway around Sarajevo and Zenica is tolled; most other roads are free but slower than the map suggests.

By train

Two trains a day run between Sarajevo and Mostar and on to Čapljina. The journey to Mostar takes about two hours through the Neretva canyon and costs around 14 KM one way. Buy tickets at the station; seats are not reserved. In summer some trains continue to Ploče on the Croatian coast.

By bus

Buses connect almost every town and are the main way to travel without a car. Buy tickets at the station or from the driver; large bags usually cost a small extra fee. In Sarajevo, most buses leave from the main bus station next to the railway station, but some routes to Republika Srpska and Serbia use the East Sarajevo (Lukavica) station.
