  • The Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in 1914
  • Vijećnica, the old City Hall, rebuilt and reopened in 2014

  • Trebević cable car and the 1984 Olympic bobsleigh track

A day in Sarajevo

Start early in Baščaršija before the tour groups arrive: the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the covered Bezistan and Morića han inn. Walk west along Ferhadija, where a line in the pavement marks the meeting of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian city. Cross to the Latin Bridge and Vijećnica, then take the cable car up Trebević in the afternoon.

In the evening, climb to the Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija) for the view over the minarets and red roofs as the lights come on.

Food and drink

Order ćevapi in somun bread with raw onion, try burek and other pies at a buregdžinica, and finish with Bosnian coffee and rahat lokum. Alcohol is served in most restaurants and bars.

Good to know

  • Streets climb steeply on both sides of the valley; wear comfortable shoes.
  • Dress modestly inside mosques and churches. Women can borrow a scarf at the larger mosques.
  • On still winter days the air in the valley can be heavily polluted. Plan mountain trips for those days.
